PETALING JAYA: Kedah’s Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has ordered the state government to review and strengthen its shariah courts to reflect the importance of Islam in the state.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers have called on the government to explain plans to set up a shariah prosecution department given that the shariah courts and offences fall within the jurisdiction of each individual state in the federation.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional will form a special committee to study and propose ways to “strengthen the position of shariah law and preserve the interests of Muslims”.

PETALING JAYA: There is no confusion in law that only the shariah courts have jurisdiction to hear cases involving Muslims intending to renounce their faith, a lawyer said, adding that the Federal Court had put the issue to rest three years ago.
